As far back as I can remember I have enjoyed the art of needlework. Cross-stitch, needlepoint or embroidery, it didn't matter, I loved them all. But a lifetime of stitching and designing was becoming more a chore than a pleasure. My eyes are not what they once were, my hands do not bend as easily, and I was contemplating putting away my favorite things.
I began to think that there must be others, such as myself, who were having the same difficulty. Since I wasn't ready to give up stitching quite yet, I began experimenting with combinations of fabrics and fibers to create a hybrid of needlework. The solution was simple though not orthodox. I found that cross-stitching with wool and a large needle, onto 6 count Aida cloth, was fun. What better name for a big new needlework concept than to call it Big Stitchtm!
The pliability of the Aida fabric, the forgiving nature of wool, plus a large chart and needle brought back the enjoyment I had remembered. No more harsh stiff needlepoint canvas, no more plying floss and trying to make it lie perfectly, no more magnifying the charts and best of all, no more pain while holding the needle.
An added bonus of Big Stitchtm is that designs stitch up quickly (a 16 x 16 design has only 96 x 96 stitches) and is proving to be a great way of teaching beginners the craft. Now my 10-year-old granddaughter and I sit side by side--novice and expert--companions in stitching. Whether you are a beginner or expert, try Big Stitch. Fall in love with needlework--all over again!
