I’ve tried them all. Butterfly holders, horizontal floss organizers, needle organizers, and bobbins that have to be wound first. My favorite method of sorting floss and keeping it close at hand is ziploc plastic bags. The snack size is perfect for skeins of floss or even tapestry yarn for needlepoint. Joann’s Crafts has smaller ones that are specifically designed for floss storage. You can write the color number on the bag with a permanent marker, punch holes at two corners and put them in numerical order on binder rings for easy use.

The leftover floss and even spare needles with thread on them will fit perfectly in the bags. No need to write or sort anywhere else in order to identify the color number. Then when you are ready to put away your project for another time, it’s all ready to go into your tote bag.

Many different tools are available to keep your floss ready for use in your current project.
